What is a Ligne?
Ligne is a unit of length derived from the French word for line. Ligne was first used by German button manufacturers in the 9th century to determine the size of buttons, and eventually became the standard unit for button sizing in the 18th century.
Conversion of dimensions
People unfamiliar with the size of button L can also convert it to inches or centimeters.
1 L = 0.635 mm
1 mm = 1/25"
For example, if the diameter of a button is 18mm, the size of the button can be calculated to be 28L (18/0.635=28.34).
